Synfig Studio
Adobe Flash Professional Alternative
Click pics to enlarge!
Synfig is a powerful, vector-based 2D animation software package, designed from the ground-up for producing feature-film quality animation with fewer resources and people. 2D Animation has traditionally been very expensive because every frame must be drawn by hand. Even with today's digital inking and painting software, the process still relies on individuals hand-drawing each frame. This task is called “tweening”. Synfig animation technology gets rid of the task of manual tweening, producing smooth, fluid motion without the animator having to draw out each frame individually. This allows you to produce 2D animation of a higher quality with fewer people.

Panorama Imaging Software
Click pics to enlarge!
Hugin is a cross-platform open source panorama photo stitching program developed by Pablo d'Angelo and others. It is a GUI front-end for Helmut Dersch's Panorama Tools and Andrew Mihal's Enblend. Stitching is accomplished by using several overlapping photos taken from the same location, and using control points to align and transform the photos so that they can be blended together to form a larger image. hugin allows for the easy (optionally automatic) creation of control points between two images, optimization of the image transforms along with a preview window so the user can see whether the panorama is acceptable. Once the preview is correct, the panorama can be fully stitched, transformed and saved in a standard image format. A long list of language versions helps to get familiar with the complex possibilities since tweaking of a broad set of parameters can be used to achieve outstanding results.
Hugin and the associated tools can be used to
combine overlapping images for panoramic photography
correct complete panorama images that are e.g. "wavy" due to a badly levelled panoramic camera
stitch large mosaics of images and photos, e.g. of long walls or large microscopy samples
find control points and optimize parameters with the help of software assistants/wizards
output several projection types like equirectangular (used by many full spherical viewers), mercator, cylindrical, stereographic and sinusoidal

LilyPond
Automated Engraving System
Click pics to enlarge!
GNU LilyPond is a software program for engraving sheet music that is available for all common operating systems; it is written in C++ and assembled by a Scheme library (GNU Guile) which allows for user customization and extension. It uses a simple text notation for music, which is then compiled into PDF (via PostScript), SVG or other formats. LilyPond can also automatically generate MIDI files from music specified in the LilyPond format.
Unlike some commercial, proprietary music engraving software, such as Finale and Sibelius, LilyPond does not contain its own graphical user interface for the creation of scores. It does, however, have the same aim of producing output comparable to professionally-engraved scores. Some graphical music notation programs; such as Rosegarden, NoteEdit and Canorus; can export files directly to LilyPond format.
One of LilyPond's major goals is to produce scores that are engraved with traditional layout rules, reflecting the era when scores were engraved by hand.

Gtk+ & Gtkmm
Multi-platform toolkit & Official C++ interface for GTK+
GTK+ is a multi-platform toolkit for creating graphical user interfaces. Offering a complete set of widgets, GTK+ is suitable for projects ranging from small one-off projects to complete application suites.
GTK+ is part of the GNU Project. However, the licensing terms for GTK+, the GNU LGPL, allow it to be used by all developers, including those developing proprietary software, without any license fees or royalties.
GTK+ is based on three libraries developed by the GTK+ team:
GTK+ has been designed from the ground up to support a range of languages, not only C/C++. Using GTK+ from languages such as Python and Perl (especially in combination with the Glade GUI builder) provides an effective method of rapid application development.
Pango is a library for layout and rendering of text, with an emphasis on internationalization. It forms the core of text and font handling for GTK+-2.0.
GLib is the low-level core library that forms the basis of GTK+ and GNOME. It provides data structure handling for C, portability wrappers, and interfaces for such runtime functionality as an event loop, threads, dynamic loading, and an object system.
The ATK library provides a set of interfaces for accessibility. By supporting the ATK interfaces, an application or toolkit can be used with such tools as screen readers, magnifiers, and alternative input devices.
Gtkmm is the official C++ interface for the popular GUI library GTK+. Highlights include typesafe callbacks, and a comprehensive set of widgets that are easily extensible via inheritance. You can create user interfaces either in code or with the Glade User Interface designer, using libglademm. There's extensive documentation, including API reference and a tutorial. Gtkmm follows the official GNOME Platform Bindings release schedule. This guarantees API/ABI-stability and new releases on a predictable schedule, delivering C++ API for the underlying GTK+ and GNOME APIs as soon as possible.
Use inheritance to derive custom widgets.
Type-safe signal handlers, in standard C++.
Polymorphism.
Use of Standard C++ Library, including strings, containers, and iterators.
Complete C++ memory management
Object composition
Automatic deallocation of dynamically allocated widgets.
Full use of C++ namespaces.
Full internationalisation with UTF8.
No macros.
Cross-platform: Linux (gcc), FreeBSD (gcc), NetBSD (gcc), Solaris (gcc, Forte), Win32 (gcc, MSVC++ .Net 2003), MacOS X (gcc), others
Free software and free of cost for both Open Source and proprietary development.
Discussed, designed and implemented in public.
7-Zip
Winzip & Winrar Alternative
7-Zip is an open source file archiver designed originally for Microsoft Windows, and later made available to other computer operating systems. In the form of p7zip, 7-Zip has been ported for use on Unix-like systems such as GNU/Linux, BSD, and Mac OS X as well as AmigaOS. It is also compatible with DOS via either a DOS port, or by using the HX-DOS extender to run the Windows command-line version.
7-Zip operates primarily with the 7z archive format, as well as being able to read several other archive formats. In operation a user can use the command line (all systems), graphical user interface ("Windows" only) or seamless Windows shell environment methods of control.
7-Zip began in 2000 and is actively developed by Igor Pavlov. In contrast to the market-leading programs WinZip and WinRAR, which remain as proprietary competitors, 7-Zip is distributed under the terms of the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) (with the RAR license restrictions), with the AES code under the revised BSD license.
7-Zip was the winner of the SourceForge.net 2007 community choice awards for "Technical Design" and for "Best Project".
7-Zip supports many features, some which may not be found in popular commercial compression software.
For encryption, 7z archives support the 256-bit Rijndael AES cipher. Encryption can be enabled for both files and the 7z directory structure. When the directory structure is encrypted, users are required to supply a password to see the filenames contained within the archive. WinZip developed AES encryption standard is also available to encrypt ZIP archives but doesn't offer filenames encryption like 7z.
7-Zip flexibly supports volumes of dynamically variable sizes, useful for backups on removable media such as writable CDs and DVDs.
When in 2-panel mode, 7-Zip can be considered a basic orthodox file manager.
7-Zip has the ability to unpack archives with corrupted filenames, renaming the files as required.
Lets users make self-extracting archives so that users who don't have the 7-Zip codec can still extract compressed files.
