NASA World Wind

Virtual Globe Software

WorldWind is an open source virtual globe developed by NASA and open source community for use on personal computers running Microsoft Windows. The program overlays NASA and USGS satellite imagery, aerial photography, topographic maps and publicly available GIS data on 3D models of the Earth and other planets.

WorldWind was released for the first time in 2004 by NASA. The latest version (1.4) developed mainly by open source community members from WorldWind Central/Free Earth Foundation had its premiere on February 14, 2007.

Apart from the Earth there are several worlds in WorldWind: Moon, Mars, Venus, Jupiter (with the four Galilean moons of Io, Ganymede, Europa and Callisto) and SDSS (imagery of stars and galactics). All these worlds are available in the File menu.

Users interact with the selected planet by rotating it, tilting the view, and zooming in and out. Five million placenames, political boundaries, latitude/longitude lines, and other location criteria can be displayed. WorldWind provides the ability to browse maps and geospatial data on the internet using the OGC's WMS servers (version 1.4 also uses WFS for downloading placenames), import ESRI shapefiles and kml/kmz files. This is an example of how WorldWind allows anyone to deliver their data.

Other features of WorldWind include support for .X (DirectX 3D polygon mesh) models and advanced visual effects such as atmospheric scattering or sun shading.

The resolution inside the US is high enough to clearly discern individual buildings, houses, cars (USGS Digital Ortho layer) and even the shadows of people (metroplitan areas in USGS Urban Ortho layer). The resolution outside the US is at least 15 meters per pixel.

Microsoft has allowed WorldWind to incorporate Virtual Earth high resolution data for non-commercial use.

WorldWind uses digital elevation model (DEM) data collected by NASA's Shuttle Radar Topography Mission. This means one can view topographic features such as the Grand Canyon or Mount Everest in three dimensions. In addition, WW has bathymetry data which allows users to see ocean features, such as trenches and ridges, in 3D.

Many people using the applications are adding their own data and making them available through various sources, such as the WorldWind Central or blogs mentioned in the link section below.

All images and movies created with WorldWind using Blue Marble, Landsat, or USGS public domain data can be freely modified, re-distributed, and used on web sites, even for commercial purposes.

Synfig Studio

Save up to £575

Adobe Flash Professional Alternative

Synfig is a powerful, vector-based 2D animation software package, designed from the ground-up for producing feature-film quality animation with fewer resources and people. 2D Animation has traditionally been very expensive because every frame must be drawn by hand. Even with today's digital inking and painting software, the process still relies on individuals hand-drawing each frame. This task is called “tweening”.

Synfig animation technology gets rid of the task of manual tweening, producing smooth, fluid motion without the animator having to draw out each frame individually.

This allows you to produce 2D animation of a higher quality with fewer people.

GIMPshop

Save up to £888

Adobe Photoshop Alternative

GIMPshop is a modification of the open source GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP), and to get the feel of Adobe Photoshop. Its primary purpose is to make Photoshop users feel comfortable using GIMP.

It shares all GIMP's features, including the long feature list and customisability, while addressing some common criticisms regarding the program's interface: GIMPshop modifies the menu structure to closely match Photoshop's, adjusts the program's terminology to match Adobe's, and, in the Windows version, uses a plugin called 'Deweirdifier' to combine the application's numerous windows in a similar manner to the MDI system used by most Windows graphics packages. While GIMPshop doesn't support Photoshop plugins, all GIMP's own plugins, filters, brushes, etc. remain available.

Due to the changes to the interface, many Photoshop tutorials can be followed in GIMPshop unchanged, and most others can be adapted for GIMPshop users with minimal effort.

Scribus

Save up to £716

Microsoft Publisher, Adobe Indesign CS2, QuarkExpress 7 Alternative

Scribus is a desktop publishing (DTP) application.
It is known for its broad feature set of page layout features comparable to leading commercial applications such as Adobe PageMaker, QuarkXPress and Adobe InDesign.

Scribus is designed for flexible layout and typesetting, and the ability to prepare files for professional quality image setting equipment. It can also create animated and interactive PDF presentations and forms. Example uses include writing small newspapers, brochures, newsletters, posters and books.

Scribus supports most major graphic formats in addition to SVG. Professional type/image setting features include CMYK colors and ICC color management. Although written in C++, it has built-in scripting using Python. It is available in more than 24 languages.

Printing is achieved via its own internal level 3 PostScript driver, including support for font embedding and sub-setting with TrueType, Type 1 and OpenType fonts. The internal driver fully supports Level 2 PostScript constructs and a large subset of Level 3 constructs.

PDF support includes transparency, encryption and a large set of the PDF 1.4 spec as well as PDF/X3, including interactive PDFs form fields, annotations and bookmarks. However, although PDF export is very good, it is not currently able to import/edit PDF files, and PDFs exported from Scribus are not searchable in Acrobat Reader if the document contains proportional fonts.

The file format, called SLA, is based on XML and is fully documented. Text can be imported from OpenDocument text documents, as well as RTF, Microsoft Word .doc, and HTML formats (although limitations apply).

Scribus cannot read or write the native file formats of commercial programs like QuarkXPress, Microsoft Publisher, and InDesign; the developers feel that reverse engineering those file formats would be prohibitively complex and could risk legal action from the makers of those programs.

VirtualDub

Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0, Final Cut Pro 5, MS MovieMaker Alternative

VirtualDub is video capture and video editing software for Microsoft Windows, written by Avery Lee. It was originally created for the purpose of compressing anime videos.

VirtualDub has many advanced features, is able to use plugins to add different video processing techniques, and can process .avi files, if the required video and audio codecs are installed.

VirtualDub comes with a number of filters. Examples include reducing the video size by half, converting the video to grayscale, arbitrary rotation and about a dozen more. Plugin filters further extend VirtualDub's capabilities.

In addition to filters, entire image sequences can be saved to hard disk as BMP or TGA files, which may be later modified. In addition, the sound track can be extracted from a video, and modifications made to it; filters can be applied before the track is spliced back in. Frame sequences and sound tracks must be edited in external software programs.

VirtualDub can also help overcome a common problem with digital cameras that also record video. Many models, especially Canon, record in an M-JPEG format that is virtually incompatible with some NLE programs, such as Vegas 6.0 and 7.0; simply saving such an AVI file as an "old-style AVI" in File allows the video to appear in Vegas.

hugin

Panorama Imaging Software

Hugin is a cross-platform open source panorama photo stitching program developed by Pablo d'Angelo and others. It is a GUI front-end for Helmut Dersch's Panorama Tools and Andrew Mihal's Enblend. Stitching is accomplished by using several overlapping photos taken from the same location, and using control points to align and transform the photos so that they can be blended together to form a larger image. hugin allows for the easy (optionally automatic) creation of control points between two images, optimization of the image transforms along with a preview window so the user can see whether the panorama is acceptable. Once the preview is correct, the panorama can be fully stitched, transformed and saved in a standard image format. A long list of language versions helps to get familiar with the complex possibilities since tweaking of a broad set of parameters can be used to achieve outstanding results.

Hugin and the associated tools can be used to

  • combine overlapping images for panoramic photography
  • correct complete panorama images that are e.g. "wavy" due to a badly levelled panoramic camera
  • stitch large mosaics of images and photos, e.g. of long walls or large microscopy samples
  • find control points and optimize parameters with the help of software assistants/wizards
  • output several projection types like equirectangular (used by many full spherical viewers), mercator, cylindrical, stereographic and sinusoidal
  • advanced photometric corrections and HDR stitchin

VLC MediaPlayer

Cyberlink Power DVD 7, Winamp 5.24, InterVideo WinDVD 7 Alternative

VLC media player is a software media player by the VideoLAN project.

It is a highly portable multimedia player, encoder, and streamer supporting many audio and video codecs and file formats as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It is able to stream over networks and to transcode multimedia files and save them into various different formats.
VLC used to stand for "VideoLAN Client", but that meaning is deprecated.

  • VLC is popular for its ability to play the video content of incomplete, unfinished, or damaged video downloads before the files have been fully downloaded. (For example, files still downloading via BitTorrent or eMule) This is because it is a packet-based player.
  • The player also has the ability to use libcdio to access .iso files so that the user can play files on a disk image, even if the user's operating system does not have the capability of working directly with .iso images.
  • VLC supports all codecs and all file formats supported by FFmpeg. This means that DVD Video and MPEG-4 playback as well as support for Ogg and Matroska (MKV) file formats works "out of the box". However, this feature is not unique to VLC, as any player using the FFmpeg libraries, including MPlayer and xine-lib-based players, can play those formats without need for external codecs. VLC does, however, also support codecs that are not included in FFmpeg.
  • VLC media player has some filters that can distort, rotate, split, deinterlace, mirror videos, create display walls, or add a logo overlay. It can also produce video output as ASCII art.
  • VLC media player can play high definition recordings of D-VHS tapes duplicated to a computer using CapDVHS.exe. This offers another way to archive all D-VHS tapes with the DRM copy freely tag. An entire library of tapes (or about 50 D-VHS 2 hours long) can be placed on a single terabyte sized hard drive. However, they must be imported by playing the tapes in real time, and can't simply be copied as data files.
  • Using a FireWire connection from cable boxes to computers; VLC can stream live, unencrypted content to a monitor or HDTV.
  • VLC media player can display the playing video as the desktop wallpaper.
  • On Microsoft Windows, VLC also supports the Direct Media Object (DMO) framework and can therefore make use of some third-party DLLs.

  • Live video compression possible with any VFW video codec installed and usable on a Windows system (including but not limited to Xvid, DivX, etc), which can reduce the usually heavy load (associated with video capture) on hard disks.
  • Supports user-specified key binding.
  • Custom video settings supported and available on a per-game basis.
  • Video capture
  • Real-time computing
  • Screencasting
  • Screen capturing, formats available are PNG or 24-bit BMP.

  • Custom automatic naming conventions with variables such as %mi to retrieve the current minute (or %t to get the title of the active window for instance)
  • Interfaces with image editing software such as Microsoft Paint or Adobe Photoshop so that editing may be done before a screenshot is uploaded
  • History section that stores the URL to every screenshot that has been uploaded so that a person may just copy and paste multiple URLs off to someone via a chat medium
  • Very silent operation, it can just be set up once and then left alone. Everything that needs to be used regularly can be accessed from the right click menu
  • Simple to configure. Two hotkeys (one for active window and one for cropped shot / full screen) make it easy so that you do not need to unnecessarily open up the program window
  • Region (cropped shots) can be captured and the URL given out to someone else in less steps then any other program in existence

Dia

Dia is open source general-purpose diagramming software, developed as part of the GNOME project's office suite and was originally created by Alexander Larsson. Dia uses a controlled single document interface (CSDI) similar to GIMP and Sodipodi.

Dia has a modular design with several shape packages available for different needs: flowchart, network diagrams, circuit diagrams, etc. It does not restrict symbols and connectors from various categories from being placed together.

Dia can be used to draw many different kinds of diagrams. It currently has special objects to help draw entity-relationship models, UML diagrams, flowcharts, network diagrams, and simple circuits. It is also possible to add support for new shapes by writing simple XML files, using a subset of SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) to draw the shape.

Dia loads and saves diagrams to a custom XML format (gzipped by default, to save space) and can print diagrams including very large diagrams that span multiple pages. It can also be scripted using the Python programming language.

Dia can export diagrams to various formats including the following:

  • EPS (Encapsulated PostScript)
  • SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics)
  • DXF (Autocad's Drawing Interchange format)
  • CGM (Computer Graphics Metafile defined by ISO standards)
  • WMF (Windows Meta File)
  • PNG (Portable Network Graphics)
  • JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)
  • VDX (Microsoft's XML for Visio Drawing)

KeePass

Password Safe

KeePass Password Safe is a password management utility for Microsoft Windows released under the GNU General Public License. KeePass stores passwords, usernames, and URLs in an encrypted database unlocked by a password, key file, or a combination of the two. The database is encrypted with AES or Twofish encryption ciphers.

KeePass is maintained by Dominik Reichl. Development began in November 2003. The project is currently rated "Production/Stable", and there are more than 28 translations available. There are currently several unofficial ports in development targeting Linux/Mac OS X, PocketPC, and J2ME.

According to the utility's author, KeePass was the first password management utility to use security-enhanced password edit controls, in this case one called CSecureEditEx. The author makes several claims to the security of the control and its resistance to password revealing utilities, however the author does not cite or make any references to any third-party testing of the control to corroborate the claims of its security. The source code is freely available and open to such testing.

Access to the database is restricted by either a master password or a key file. Both methods may be combined to create a "composite master key". If both methods are used, then both must be present to access the password database. KeePass version 2.x will introduce a third option: dependency upon the current Windows user.

WampServer

Apache, MySQL, PHP on Windows

"WAMP" stands for "Windows, Apache, MySQL, PHP" and is a variant on "LAMP" (the meaning is the same except that the L stands for "Linux"). These four programs provide a very popular platform for developing a wide variety of web-based applications. Windows you probably have heard of, Apache is a popular web server package (allows people with web browsers like Internet Explorer to connect to a computer and see the information there as web pages), MySQL is a database manager (that is, it keeps track of data in a highly organized way) and PHP is a scripting language that has highly evolved facilities for creating web pages.

It is also compatible with DOS via either a DOS port, or by using the HX-DOS extender to run the Windows command-line version.

7-Zip operates primarily with the 7z archive format, as well as being able to read several other archive formats. In operation a user can use the command line (all systems), graphical user interface ("Windows" only) or seamless Windows shell environment methods of control.

7-Zip began in 2000 and is actively developed by Igor Pavlov. In contrast to the market-leading programs WinZip and WinRAR, which remain as proprietary competitors, 7-Zip is distributed under the terms of the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) (with the RAR license restrictions), with the AES code under the revised BSD license.

7-Zip supports many features, some which may not be found in popular commercial compression software.

  • For encryption, 7z archives support the 256-bit Rijndael AES cipher. Encryption can be enabled for both files and the 7z directory structure. When the directory structure is encrypted, users are required to supply a password to see the filenames contained within the archive. WinZip developed AES encryption standard is also available to encrypt ZIP archives but doesn't offer filenames encryption like 7z.
  • 7-Zip flexibly supports volumes of dynamically variable sizes, useful for backups on removable media such as writable CDs and DVDs.
  • When in 2-panel mode, 7-Zip can be considered a basic orthodox file manager.
  • 7-Zip has the ability to unpack archives with corrupted filenames, renaming the files as required.
  • Lets users make self-extracting archives so that users who don't have the 7-Zip codec can still extract compressed files.

Ghostscript

Adobe Acrobat 7.0, Adobe Acrobat Reader 8 Alternative

Ghostscript is a suite of software based on an interpreter for Adobe Systems' PostScript and Portable Document Format (PDF) page description languages

Ghostscript can be used as a raster image processor (RIP) for raster computer printers — for instance, as an input filter of line printer daemon — or as the RIP engine behind PostScript and PDF viewers.

Ghostscript can also be used as a file format converter, such as PostScript to PDF converter; this is often combined with a PostScript printer driver in "virtual printer" PDF creators.

As it takes the form of a language interpreter, Ghostscript can also be used as a general purpose programming environment.

Ghostscript has been ported to many operating systems, including most Unix and Unix-like systems (including Linux), Mac OS, OpenVMS, Microsoft Windows, OS/2 and AmigaOS.

Art Of Illusion

3D Modelling And Rendering Studio

Art of Illusion is a open source 3D modelling and rendering studio.
It is written entirely in Java, and should be usable on any Java Virtual Machine which is compatible with J2SE 1.4 or later.

The current version is 2.5.1, released Oct. 21, 2007. This version is both stable and powerful enough to be used for serious, high end animation work. Many of its capabilities rival those found in commercial programs. Some of the highlights include subdivision surface based modelling tools, skeleton based animation, and a graphical language for designing procedural textures and materials

OpenFX

3D Animation Program

OpenFX is an Open-Source, modeling and animation studio, distributed under the GNU General Public License, created by Dr. Stuart Ferguson. He made the decision to release the source code to the public in the middle of 1999 and released a stable version a year and a half later. The product, formerly named SoftF/X, was renamed to OpenFX.

The OpenFX featureset includes a full renderer and raytracing engine, NURBS support, kinematics-based animation, morphing, and an extensive plugin API. Plugin capabilities include image post processor effects such as lens flare, fog and depth of field. Animation effects such as explosions, waves and dissolves add to the flexibility of the program. Version 2.0 also features support for modern graphics cards with hardware GPU acceleration.

Gtk+ & Gtkmm

Multi-platform toolkit & Official C++ interface for GTK+

GTK+ is a multi-platform toolkit for creating graphical user interfaces. Offering a complete set of widgets, GTK+ is suitable for projects ranging from small one-off projects to complete application suites.

GTK+ is part of the GNU Project. However, the licensing terms for GTK+, the GNU LGPL, allow it to be used by all developers, including those developing proprietary software, without any license fees or royalties.

GTK+ is based on three libraries developed by the GTK+ team:

GTK+ has been designed from the ground up to support a range of languages, not only C/C++. Using GTK+ from languages such as Python and Perl (especially in combination with the Glade GUI builder) provides an effective method of rapid application development.

  • Pango is a library for layout and rendering of text, with an emphasis on internationalization. It forms the core of text and font handling for GTK+-2.0.
  • GLib is the low-level core library that forms the basis of GTK+ and GNOME. It provides data structure handling for C, portability wrappers, and interfaces for such runtime functionality as an event loop, threads, dynamic loading, and an object system.
  • The ATK library provides a set of interfaces for accessibility. By supporting the ATK interfaces, an application or toolkit can be used with such tools as screen readers, magnifiers, and alternative input devices.

Gtkmm is the official C++ interface for the popular GUI library GTK+. Highlights include typesafe callbacks, and a comprehensive set of widgets that are easily extensible via inheritance. You can create user interfaces either in code or with the Glade User Interface designer, using libglademm. There's extensive documentation, including API reference and a tutorial.
Gtkmm follows the official GNOME Platform Bindings release schedule. This guarantees API/ABI-stability and new releases on a predictable schedule, delivering C++ API for the underlying GTK+ and GNOME APIs as soon as possible.

  • Use inheritance to derive custom widgets.
  • Type-safe signal handlers, in standard C++.
  • Polymorphism.
  • Use of Standard C++ Library, including strings, containers, and iterators.
  • Complete C++ memory management
    • Object composition
    • Automatic deallocation of dynamically allocated widgets.
  • Full use of C++ namespaces.
  • Full internationalisation with UTF8.
  • No macros.
  • Cross-platform: Linux (gcc), FreeBSD (gcc), NetBSD (gcc), Solaris (gcc, Forte), Win32 (gcc, MSVC++ .Net 2003), MacOS X (gcc), others
  • Free software and free of cost for both Open Source and proprietary development.
  • Discussed, designed and implemented in public.
